Lanzarote – The Logical Choice for Winter Sun

Whilst not strictly speaking within Europe, the island of Lanzarote is one of the only genuine destinations worth visiting in winter. With extra daylight hours even in the middle of December, it is an ideal place for those who suffer seasonal adjustment disorder to explore.

The clear atmosphere created by the Atlantic waters which surround the Canary Islands make them a hotspot for a huge variety of activities, including star gazing. There are obvious health benefits as well, due to the dry air and warm temperatures the islands’ enjoy.

These factors account for the huge number of visitors who regularly travel here each year from the UK. In recent times, the addition of numerous low cost airlines offering flights to Lanzarote has helped to create more demand across a wider demographic in Britain.

The short flight time in comparison with long haul destinations is beginning to make the most easterly Canary Island a logical choice for winter sun travellers. And thanks to the wide range of activities that visitors can take part in, it isn’t just for beach lovers.

In fact, Lanzarote has something to offer sports enthusiasts, nature lovers and those who prefer more cultural attractions. Elements which contribute to the island’s enduring popularity.

And whilst in the past the apartment was the preferred style of accommodation, these days holiday villas in Lanzarote are becoming increasingly favoured. This is as much a reflection of the way the internet has revolutionized booking a holiday as anything.

For the more traditional holidaymaker, there is still the option of choosing from one of the many Lanzarote hotels. And as many of these establishments have been constructed in the last ten years, the quality of accommodation is extremely good.

Luckily, the island has been saved from too much tourist development by strict regulations governing urban planning. And it is this type of control that has allowed Lanzarote to explore a different relationship to tourism than many other holiday destinations.

Instead of allowing the coastline to be swamped, there are whole stretches of the island that are exactly as they were before the birth of the package holiday. Short term gain has been largely restricted with a view to encouraging visitors to come back year after year to sample the island’s charms.
